Parallel Contexts: El Salvador of 1989 and Nicaragua of Today
Start Date: 11/12/2019Start Time: 12:30 PM
End Date: 11/12/2019End Time: 1:30 PM

Event Description:
Dr. Jorge Huete, SVP of the UCA, Managua, will offer a social analysis and personal perspective on El Salvador of 1989 and Nicaragua today. In El Salvador during the 80's civil war was raging on, and hundreds of thousands of innocent bystanders were killed for speaking out on violations of human rights. Many individuals were killed, including students. On November 16, 1989 six Jesuits living at the University of Central America in El Salvador were murdered, along with two lay women, seeking shelter for escalating violence in their neighborhood. The Jesuits worked, educated and stood for and with the people of El Salvador.  This event changed how Jesuits would educate young people, with an amplified rallying call still inspiring young people today to pursue justice and advocacy in their careers and vocations. Nicaragua of today is on a parallel track with student protests demanding change at the government level given the gross human rights violations occurring in the country and unjust government reforms designed to deepen the pockets of the wealthy and exploit the working class and the marginalized.
Dr. Huete will offer his perspective as a Jesuit educator and as a former student of one of the slain Jesuits.
